Dr. Hellems is a general pediatrician and associate professor of pediatrics at UVA. She sees patients and teaches and supervises residents and medical students in the Birdsong general pediatric clinic. Dr. Hellems has served in many roles in her 15 years on the faculty at UVA. She currently works as an associate chief medical information officer and is excited to be the associate program director for a newly accredited Clinical Informatics fellowship program. 

Dr. Hellems was born and raised in New Jersey. Prior to attending medical school, she attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, earned an MS in operations research from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked as a consultant in the D.C. area. Dr. Hellems moved to the Charlottesville area in 1992 to pursue premedical coursework and graduated from the UVA School of Medicine in 1998. 

She completed her pediatric residency at UVA in 2001, served as pediatric chief resident and then joined the faculty in the Division of General Pediatrics in 2002. She earned a master’s degree in health evaluation sciences from UVA in 2003. 

Dr. Hellems lives with her husband and a small pack of rescue beagles in the Charlottesville area. She plays old-time banjo and volunteers with the National Park Service on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
