When You Call

Our administrative assistant schedules appointments and tests and helps get messages to everyone. Appointments for new patients are usually available within a week.

Before Your First Appointment

Your Medical Records

  • Send copies of your pathology slides (available through your hospital's pathology department) a few days before your appointment date. 
  • Send copies of any MRIs or CT scans.
  • We'll also need a copy of the pathology report. This report may be available from your hospital's Medical Records Department or from your doctor. 

Note: Even though you may be charged a fee for copies, don't send originals.

Bring With You to Your First Appointment

If you can't send us your information ahead of time, bring the following to your appointment:

  • Copies of your pathology slides (available through your hospital's pathology department)
  • Copies of your MRI and any other films, such at CAT scans, X-rays (available through your hospital's radiology department)
  • Doctors' notes and reports from your medical record (available either through your doctor's office or your hospital's medical records department)


You don't need a referral to make an appointment with us. However, many patients are referred to us by community medical and surgical oncologists once they get an initial diagnosis.

Get a Second Opinion

Our expert doctors offer second opinions either in person here at UVA or via mail. We'll work with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and neurosurgeons in the community to make sure you get an accurate diagnosis.
