I'm Dr. Jim Nataro. I am the physician in chief of the UVA Children's Hospital. Quality and safety are words that we talk about every day in the context of care. And quality basically means, are we getting the outcome that we are striving to get? And safety means we want to make sure that nothing unforeseen happens, no complication occurs in the course of that care. We try to follow metrics that matter-- metrics that matter to you as the patient. Are you getting the outcome that you want? And are you free of complications that you don't want? And so if you are about to bring the child to care to have an operation or some other procedure or just to be admitted to the hospital, you want the right outcome without an unforeseen complication. And so you would like to be able to see those rates and know that the hospital that you're going to has competitive or even outstanding performance in those metrics that matter-- having the right outcome and not having a complication that you don't want.
