The Hospital Education Program (HEP) is a partnership between the Virginia Department of Education, UVA Health Children’s and Charlottesville City Public Schools.

The goal is to provide academic instruction and school-related services to students who are receiving medical care at UVA Health Children’s.

All HEP services are free to children and their families.

Inpatient Services

School-aged students (ages 2-21) are eligible. Instructors make a plan to address the learning needs of each child.

Certified teachers work with students in our classroom or at their bedside.

Special offerings include:

  • Library/Media Center – fostering a love of reading and helping students become lifelong learners. The library has a wide selection of fiction and nonfiction resources for preschool through high school including books, eBooks, and audiobooks.
  • Art therapy – spurring creative energy while adding to the healing process. Self-expression, self-confidence, choice-making, and communication are encouraged. Children experiment with different mediums, colors, and textures.

Outpatient Services

Educational consultants meet with children and families during clinic visits and act as liaisons between medical staff and the school division.

They work to minimize the effects of a child’s medical condition on school progress. They make phone calls and visit schools to ensure the child’s needs are clear to school staff.
