iSIPsmarter: An RCT to evaluate the efficacy, reach, and engagement of a technology-based behavioral and health literacy intervention to reduce sugary beverages among rural Appalachian adults
The Department of Public Health Sciences is conducting a research study comparing two web-based programs to help people drink fewer sugary drinks. What Does the Study Include? • The study lasts 18 months and, if you decide to join, you will be randomized (like a flip of a coin) into one of the two web-based programs • You will complete the nine-week web-based program you are assigned and complete four 90-minute health assessments How Are the Programs Different? iSIPsmarter Program Website • Six interactive lessons on decreasing sugary drinks • Emails and other reminders to complete lessons and activities • Daily sugary drink tracking • Optional daily weight tracking Sugary Drink Education Website • Self-guided lessons to be done at your own pace • Printable forms to track your sugary drinks and weight Possible benefits of the study include: • Learning how to decrease your sugar intake • Improving health conditions • Modest weight loss To join the study, you must: • Be Black or African American • Drink more than the recommended daily amount of sugary drinks • Be 18 or older • Be able to access the internet on a computer or tablet at least once a week • Be willing and able to receive email and text reminders to complete program tasks Study related materials and procedures will be provided at no cost. All participants will receive a scale to track weight at study start and may keep after the study is complete.
