Clinical Trials | Research Study for Adults to Understand the Effect of Music on Perceived Pain Levels

Music APM EEG

The UVA Health System Department of Anesthesiology seeks healthy adults ages 18 to 65 for a research study. The purpose of the study is to understand how the brain responds to music that makes you feel different emotions and how that may impact your ability to feel pain. You may be eligible for this study if you have normal hearing (either naturally or with a hearing device) and do not experience chronic pain. Study involves one in-person visit lasting up to 3 hours. You will listen to different kinds of music and be asked to rate your pain while heat (ranging from warm to hot) is applied to your forearm. At this time, we may also test your brain’s electrical activity in a non-invasive way through the use of an EEG. You may also be asked to participate in a short interview about your experience. Study-related tests and procedures provided at no cost.
