Effects of Exercise Training Intensity and Inorganic Nitrate Supplementation on Vascular Health and Fitness in Post-Menopausal Females
The Department of Kinesiology seeks healthy post-menopausal women ages 45-75 for a research study. The purpose of the study is to improve our understanding of the level of exercise intensity needed for post-menopausal females and how taking a beetroot juice supplement to increase blood flow could potentially enhance the benefits of exercise for this group. You may be eligible for this study if: - You are a post-menopausal female. - You do not currently take hormone therapy. - You do not exercise 3x a week. - You do not have cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Study involves exercise training 3 times weekly for one month and 4 additional visits for testing at UVA’s campus. You will be asked to take a nitrate supplement (beetroot juice) or a matching placebo during the month of exercise training. The visits overall will consist of a physical exam, mouth swab, blood and saliva samples, a series of questionnaires, and physical assessment tests. All tests are non-invasive except the blood draws. Some visits may be combined to decrease the number of times you have to come to UVA. Study-related tests, treatment, and exercise training will be provided at no cost.
