Highlights
Meet Pediatrician Ina Stephens, MD
Hi, I'm Dr. Ina Stephens. I'm in the Department of Pediatrics. I am a pediatrician as well as a pediatric infectious disease subspecialist. So I see a large variety of patients, but concentrating mostly on patients with medical complexities. I first developed an interest in medicine when I was really young. My dad was a dermatologist. His office was on the side of our house. And then when I was a freshman in college, my father took me on a medical missionary trip to the Dominican Republic and Haiti. And that trip, I think changed my life. It got me really interested in infectious disease. It got me interested in just taking care of the underserved and really looking at the whole picture of patient care. My first job is to really get to know the patient. So I usually sit the patient down, whether they're coming in for an infectious disease consultation, if they're coming in for a complex medical problem where they want integrative therapies, if they're coming in for a diagnostic dilemma, whatever it is, I sit them down. I say, "I need to hear the whole story." We have some wonderful, very, very well experienced and very passionate doctors here at UVA. Whether the doctor that you see knows the answer to what your problem is, if they don't, I think that they are going to go find the answer for you and find the subspecialist that will likely be available here at UVA to help take care of you. So I think that the resources here are incredible.
