Bio & Overview

Madhusmita Misra, MBBS, MD, MPH, is a pediatric endocrinologist with decades of clinical experience. She is also the Benjamin Armistead Shepherd Professor and Chair of the Pediatrics at UVA, and Physician-in-Chief of UVA Health Children’s. Before joining UVA, she worked at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, for close to 25 years, where she served as Division Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology and Associate Chief of Academic Faculty Development in the Department of Pediatrics, Medical Research Officer for Massachusetts General Hospital through the Harvard wide CTSA and Associate Director of the MGH Translational and Clinical Research Center. She has held several leadership positions within the Pediatric Endocrine Society (PES), including serving on its board of directors as a Director-at-Large, and then as its President.

Dr. Misra was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by her great uncle, who was the first licensed pediatrician in their state in India. He was loved by his patients because of his kindness, knowledge, and wisdom. He motivated Dr. Misra to provide care that is not only comprehensive but also compassionate, and she strives for this in her practice today.

After completing medical school and residency in India, Dr. Misra moved to the United States and completed an additional residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. She then went on to complete a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, and a Master's in Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA.

Providing the highest quality of care to Dr. Misra means providing her patients with value-based care that is coordinated, individualized, family-centered, equitable, team-oriented, and state-of-the-art.

She has received many awards for mentoring and research, including the William Silen Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award from Harvard Medical School, the Outstanding Mentor Award from the Pediatric Endocrine Society, the John Haddad Young Investigator Award from AIMM-ASBMR, the Janet W. McArthur Award for Excellence in Clinical Research from Women in Endocrinology, and the Claflin Distinguished Scholar Award from Massachusetts General Hospital.

Outside of work, she loves reading and traveling.
