Richard Stevenson, MD, completed his pediatric residency at the University of Virginia and joined the UVA faculty in 1989 following fellowship training in Developmental Pediatrics at the University of Iowa. He is board-certified in neurodevelopmental disabilities and is an active clinician, teacher and clinical investigator.

Dr. Stevenson's primary expertise is with cerebral palsy. He helps children and young people with different disabilities, like brain and spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, autism, spina bifida, developmental delays, feeding issues, ADHD, and other behavioral disorders. His research interests include how other health problems (like malnutrition, osteoporosis, and chronic pain) affect the health, abilities, social life, and happiness of children with cerebral palsy and their families.

He led the North American Growth in Cerebral Palsy Project, a big study on growth and nutrition involving many centers across the region. In addition, he co-edited a book (2018) entitled Children and Youth with Complex Cerebral Palsy: Care and Management, aimed at primary care practitioners. Dr. Stevenson serves as past president of the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine.
