Bio & Overview

Shure professor of neurology and pediatrics, Howard P. Goodkin, MD, PhD, served as the former chair of the Department of Neurology and currently the Director of the Division of Pediatric Neurology. He received his undergraduate medical education at Washington University in St. Louis and his postgraduate medical education at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Goodkin joined the UVA Health Children's faculty in 2002. He specializes in the care of children with epilepsy. He also serves as the neurology consultant for the UVA sports teams. He is an educator at the local and national level.

He serves on the board of the American Epilepsy Society. In addition, he has served as a councilor for the Professors of Child Neurology and on several committees for the Child Neurology Society. Other involvements include or have included: membership on NIH study sections, the scientific advisory board for Citizens United in Research (CURE) and the scientific advisory board for the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance. He is currently an associate editor of Epilepsy Research and on the editorial board of Pediatric Neurology. He’s also an associate editor of Wyllie’s “The Treatment of Epilepsy: Principles and Practices.”

Status epilepticus, seizures, epilepsy, sports concussion. A founding member of the pediatric Status Epilepticus Research Group (pSERG), he has an ongoing collaboration to better define the epidemiology and treatment of children with refractory status epilepticus.
