Bio & Overview
Reza J. Daugherty, MD, FAAP, is a pediatric radiologist and the chief of pediatric medical imaging at UVA Health Children’s. He specializes in diagnosing a broad range of pediatric conditions using advanced imaging technologies, such as MRI and contrast-enhanced ultrasound.
Daugherty holds board certifications in general pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, diagnostic radiology, and pediatric radiology. He earned his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College and completed his pediatric residency at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
After several years in clinical practice as a pediatric emergency medicine physician, he pursued additional residency training in diagnostic radiology at Christiana Hospital and returned to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for a fellowship in pediatric radiology.
In his leadership role at UVA, he has significantly advanced pediatric imaging services. He standardized imaging protocols, expanded access to pediatric imaging in Northern Virginia, and established Virginia’s first pediatric radiology fellowship. He also spearheaded the development of innovative imaging services, including the contrast-enhanced voiding urosonography program — placing UVA among a select group of pediatric centers offering this cutting-edge technique.
A dedicated educator and mentor, Daugherty frequently presents at local, regional, and national conferences on pediatric imaging topics. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, national guidelines, and book chapters.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife, their twin son and daughter, and their rescue dogs. The family is actively involved in animal rescue efforts and advocates for the humane treatment of animals.

I'm Reza Daugherty. I'm the Chief of Pediatric Medical Imaging here at University of Virginia. As a pediatric radiologist, we take care of all facets of children, including abdominal problems, neurologic problems, anything, really, that affects, again, kids spanning the entire age spectrum. I was a pediatric ER doctor for almost a decade. Because of my many years of clinical experience caring for patients directly, not just indirectly via diagnostic imaging, I think it's offered a lot of opportunities for me to understand on a first-hand experience what the patients go through, what it's like for them to try and navigate the medical system. How difficult it can be for the kids and their parents. And it helps me understand what the clinicians are looking for, and what questions they really need answered from us. I'm passionate about helping kids, and making sure that they are getting the optimal treatment that they deserve, and making sure that the families are comfortable and understand what to expect, and what it means for their diagnosis that we give them, and to try and help them to the best of our abilities. We're the number one hospital in the state, and we care for our patients with the newest technology, and the best trained physicians, and we do it from a family-centered care approach, meaning that we don't just take care of the children here. We take care of their parents and extended family to the best of our ability.
