Pediatric Dermatology

Your child’s skin is a critical component and reflection of their health.

At UVA Health Children’s, we provide care for common and temporary conditions like warts to rare conditions like vascular anomalies that require multidisciplinary care.

Conditions We See

Our pediatric dermatology team evaluates and treats children with many different skin conditions, including:

  • Eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions
  • Psoriasis
  • Warts
  • Molluscum contagiosum
  • Vascular anomalies, including port-wine stains and hemangiomas
  • Ichthyosis
  • Skin scaling
  • Mastocytosis
  • Genetic conditions that affect the skin
  • Other common, complex and rare dermatologic conditions

Some children come to us with a condition that is familiar and easily recognized. Others may have symptoms that have been difficult to diagnose or treat. Pediatric dermatology can be especially helpful when a child's skin condition is unusual, persistent or connected to another medical condition.

Specialized Care for Vascular Anomalies

When there are differences in the blood vessels, veins, or arteries near the skin or other organs, these are called ‘vascular anomalies.’ Some of these, like birthmarks, are harmless. But others, like port wine stains or hemangiomas close to major facial structures, need medical attention. We provide multidisciplinary care for these conditions.

At UVA Health Children’s, our team includes:

  • Interventional radiologists
  • Dermatologists
  • Plastic surgeons
  • Hematologists
  • Ear, nose, and throat specialists

For vascular malformations, when appropriate, we’ll conduct genetic testing for more targeted treatment.

What to Expect at Your Child's Visit

During your child's visit, we will carefully examine their skin and talk with you about your child's symptoms, medical history, and concerns.

Sometimes, a skin condition’s appearance provides the information we need for a diagnosis. Other times, we may need additional testing or evaluation.

An important part of any treatment plan is patient education. Before you leave, we want you to understand your child’s condition, why it’s affecting them, and what we can do to treat it. We’re able to offer treatment options not available everywhere, including pulse dye laser treatment.

Some of these procedures can be done as an outpatient and without the use of anesthesia.

Depending on your child’s condition, we may use a wide range of treatment methods. We’ll make sure you understand your options, any risk factors, and how we’ll be able to see if treatment is working. Every child and every family is different, and we work with you to develop a plan that makes sense for your child's needs.
