Surgical Site Infections

While rare, infection is a serious complication of surgery. In order to guarantee the best outcomes for our patients, we work hard to limit infections.

What Is a Surgical Site Infection?

An SSI is an infection that happens after an operation. It usually affects the area around an incision. But it can also sometimes affect deep tissue near where the surgery took place.

Most of the time, SSIs include symptoms like:

  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Fever
  • Fluid draining

Usually, antibiotics can treat surgical site infections well. But they still need to be monitored and taken seriously.

How Do We Measure SSIs?

We measure how many infections occur per every 100 operating room visits.

How Can We Reduce the Risk of SSIs?

By identifying SSIs quickly, we can help identify any potential causes. We can also make sure patients and their families are educated on the earliest symptoms. This helps with early identification, which reduces serious SSIs.
