Bio & Overview

Jeannean Carver, MD, is the head of pediatric critical care medicine at UVA Health Children's and works primarily in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and on the pediatric sedation service.

Dr. Carver earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins. She then moved to Washington, D.C., for a residency in pediatric medicine and a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at Children’s National Medical Center.

After completing her training, Dr. Carver worked at the Children’s National Medical Center, Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health. She then served as medical director of the PICU at Columbus Children’s Hospital and assistant professor of pediatrics at Ohio State University. She joined UVA as an assistant professor of pediatrics and anesthesiology in 1998, and was promoted to associate professor in 2006.

For several years, Dr. Carver had NIH funding to study the ways cells adapt to states of chronic low oxygen, something experienced by many children with congenital heart disease. Now, she works primarily in the ICU with critically ill pediatric patients, sedates children for procedures and oversees the Critical Care Division. She enjoys working with charities to care for children after heart surgery all over the world, and has been privileged to travel to Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, China, Uganda and Honduras in that capacity.
