Bio & Overview

Jeffrey Donowitz, MD, is a pediatric infectious diseases doctor who specializes in treating children with infections due to a variety of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. He also treats children with disruptions of their gut microbiome, such as small intestine bacterial overgrowth.

In addition to treating patients, Dr. Donowitz researches gastrointestinal diseases and treatments with a focus on small intestine bacterial overgrowth, the gut microbiome, malnutrition, and environmental enteric dysfunction.

“I strive to understand the child who has the disease before I attempt to name and treat the illness,” he says.

Dr. Donowitz was raised just outside of Charlottesville in Ivy. Both of his parents were infectious disease physicians at UVA Health.

After traveling to low-income countries at a young age, Dr. Donowitz decided to become a doctor so he could find new treatments that improve the lives of people living in the world’s poorest conditions.
