Bio & Overview
Shelby White, MD, is a fellowship-trained pediatric cardiologist and medical director of Fetal Cardiology at UVA Health Children's. She has expertise in the full range of heart conditions that impact children.
Her clinical expertise includes:
- Fetal Echocardiography
- Single ventricle heart disease
- Heart failure
- Cardiac transplantation
In her approach to working with patients, she says, “I start by listening, and then listen some more. The most important part of taking care of children and their families is to make sure that we are on the same page and that I understand what the concerns are so I can be most helpful.”
She adds, “Our pediatric cardiology team here is phenomenal. And we always work as a group to make sure that we are presenting families with all the options for both testing and interventions … It is the greatest privilege to be trusted with the care of someone's child and I take that responsibility very seriously.”
Dr. White grew up in a small town in Mississippi where her interests were mainly sports and wrestling with her younger brother. She attended the University of Mississippi for an undergraduate degree in biochemistry.
She received her medical degree from University of Mississippi Medical Center. She then did her residency and fellowship training (pediatric cardiology) at the University of Virginia, where she served as chief resident.
Before joining UVA Health in 2019 as an associate professor, she served on the faculty at the University of Arizona – Tucson. She says, “I have always enjoyed science and math and medicine has allowed me to use those interests and pair them with the ability to help patients and families through difficult times.”
“On a lighter note, she adds, “my spirit animal is a basset hound.”
