William BrandTranscription My name is Will Brand and I am a physician in the Department of Otolaryngology here at UVA with a subspecialty in pediatric Otolaryngology. The other name for Otolaryngology is ear nose and throat. So we kind of treat everything throughout that entire spectrum. We'll treat hearing loss, patients who need ear tubes, nasal issues as well including allergies sinus infections. So it's really a broad field, which is one of the great things about it. Patients can come to me with issues, which we treat medically, first with obviously with medications that sort of thing to try and fix whatever problem they're having. But if those don't work we can actually follow them all the way through to the operating room for a more aggressive intervention. With kids it's never just the child who's going through something it's everyone and so I try and pay attention to everyone in terms of that. The other thing I really try and do is connect with the children. Whether it's a serious issue or a relatively benign issue, there's still a child going through it. Being able to come in and really connect with the child and reduce that stress is one of the big things that I try and focus on during my clinic visits. Even if we're talking about sometimes a very high level serious issue, trying to bring a little humor or even silliness in can really make that much easier on everybody.
