William G. Wilson, MD, has been a member of the UVA faculty since 1979 and the chief of the Division of Genetics in the Department of Pediatrics since 2001. He also serves as the consultant to the Virginia Department of Health for diagnosing and managing metabolic diseases detected through newborn screening.

Wilson cares for adults and children with a wide range of genetic conditions, including inherited metabolic disorders and lysosomal storage diseases (disorders caused by a lack of enzymes that break down fats and sugars in the body’s cells).

He and his colleagues in the Division of Genetics have established an active enzyme replacement therapy program for Fabry disease, Pompe disease, Gaucher disease and MPS 1, 2, and VI. Wilson’s team also works with the cardiogenetics program to care for patients with a variety of connective tissue disorders. To make these services more accessible to patients and families in central and western Virginia, UVA established a network of clinics.

Born in Lincolnton, North Carolina, Wilson received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he was a Morehead Scholar. He stayed at UNC to attend medical school and then completed a pediatric internship at UVA. WiIson returned to UNC to complete a pediatric residency and a genetics fellowship.

Since joining the UVA faculty, Wilson has served on several UVA School of Medicine committees and is passionate about genetics and medical education on all levels.
