Bio & Overview

Barrett H. Barnes, MD, is a pediatric gastroenterologist, who is board-certified in general pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology. He has expertise in caring for children with gastrointestinal and food allergy conditions, including:

  • Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs)
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)
  • Food protein-induced enterocolitis (FPIES)
  • Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) or red meat allergy
  • Celiac disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease

At UVA Health Children's, Dr. Barnes founded two pediatric multidisciplinary clinics. One for eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases, and another for gastrointestinal food allergy syndromes.

He is the co-director of the Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Diseases (EGIDs) clinic with Dr Emily McGowan and the Gastrointestinal Allergy Clinic (Alpha Gal Syndrome, FPIES) with Dr Samantha Minnicozzi from the Division of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology.

In his approach to working with children and their families, Dr. Barnes says, “I treat everyone the same. I give them my best regardless of their lot in life.”

“Children are the underdogs in this country. I love the underdog. I love serving the underserved, the under-valued, the under-represented, those without voice, resources or choice.”

Dr. Barnes has an interest in medical education. He serves as the Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship director. He’s also served as both associate and director of the General Pediatric Residency Program at UVA Health.

An Indiana native, Dr. Barnes grew up in a rural environment until mid-high school, which took him briefly to the Chicago suburbs. He quickly returned to Indiana and completed his undergraduate studies at Indiana University, Bloomington and his graduate studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.

He earned his medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, and completed his residency in general pediatrics at the University of Virginia. His fellowship training in pediatric gastroenterology took him to the Children’s Hospital at the University of Colorado, Denver.

He returned to UVA Health Children's and joined the faculty in 2007. Outside of work, Dr. Barnes enjoys spending time with “my family, my critters, as well as most hands-on projects like carpentry, hardscaping, woodworking, masonry and gardening.” He adds, “I love my Hoosiers and Bruins and have ZERO shame in being a Hokie fan alongside the Cavaliers.”

Dr. Barnes is THE ABSOLUTE BEST. I can't even put into words how thankful I am we got to see him. We live 5 hours away and will make the trip regularly just to see him. He was truly concerned for my daughter's health and came up with a good plan for us to start with. Excellent patient care and bedside manner.

Dr. Barnes was UNBELIEVABLE with my 12 year old daughter who had to discuss embarrassing things and then have him look at her bottom. He put her at ease from the get-go. He normalized the embarrassing and he gave her plenty of room to giggle and laugh when they had to discuss "gas" and "poop" and "butt holes"! Not to mention that he was willing to take her on when he's not seeing new patients because he already sees my son and understands some of our family history and was understood my desire to have him look at her case as well. I am so incredibly thankful for Dr. Barnes' expertise in his field and the way he engages his patients and makes them feel seen and cared for and understood.

I've been with this exact team for 10 years and feel so known and cared for by them! They are willing to think outside the box, they never made me feel I'm just being pushed through a system. You can tell that they really care!!

Dr. Barnes sat and truly listened to us about our daughter's current health issues. He was able to repeat back a summary of what we had been experiencing which showed that he was truly listening. He had an incredible bed side manner and was clearly very knowledgeable about the topics discussed. I felt extremely validated and heard throughout our entire visit. He was professional, kind, smart and caring. He made us feel like we were the only patient of the day and made us feel like he had all the time in the world (which obviously he is a very busy guy!). Genuinely so impressed and grateful we landed with him as our daughter's doctor!

I was beyond impressed with the multi-disciplinary care of this visit. Everyone was aware of my son's history, and having the whole team in the room at the same time ensured everyone was on the same page. 10/10 experience. I work at uva and this was in the top three experiences I have had as a patient/family member. Very grateful for the exemplary care.
