Catherine Casey, MD, is a professor of family medicine at UVA. Her clinical interests include taking care of LGBTQ patients and teaching students, residents and faculty about LGBTQ health. Recently, Dr. Casey helped establish UVA Health’s adult transgender clinic, at her office in Crozet. She also enjoys seeing pediatric patients and providing women’s health care, including prenatal and postpartum care.
Originally from Ithaca, New York, Dr. Casey did her undergraduate training at Cornell University, her hometown school, and went to medical school at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Eager to see what family medicine was like outside of the Northeast (and ready for some sunshine), she came to Charlottesville for her residency training and has been here ever since.
Dr. Casey appreciates the way family medicine constantly offers new opportunities to broaden her knowledge and her skill sets. She enjoys providing personalized care to patients and their families, keeping their goals and values in mind. And teaching medical students and residents opens her up to new ways of thinking and reaffirms her commitment to family medicine as a profession. Her non-working hours are divided between her son, Dylan, and the New Yorker magazine.

Catherine Casey TranscriptionMy name is Catherine Casey and I'm a physician specializing in Family Medicine. I see patients of all ages, so kids, newborns, and adolescents. I also see a lot of women for their GYN care, prenatal care, and birth control. I see men, and I see older people, so pretty much the gamete. Family medicine is a great place to develop long term relationships with patients and families and that's the part that I enjoy the most. I also enjoy the variety that I get to see every day whether it's chronic care or urgent care or doing procedures. The biggest experiences that have shaped my career have been the type of patients that I've gotten to see and it's been a real privilege to have them share so much of their lives with me. That's part of how I got interested in doing transgender care because I started out just having a handful of transgender patients coincidently, and they were so inspiring to me I decided that this was an area I really wanted to learn more about. Right now, I'm primarily known for my LGBTQ patient care and the transgender patient care. New patients who see us over at Crozet can expect a very warm welcome from our receptionists and really excellent communication from our nurses. I think one of my favorite parts of working at the UVA Crozet Clinic is how well we work together. People who have medical issues that require multiple specialists, really benefit from coming to UVA because we collaborate really well and work together really well. So if you want that whole person care, that's well coordinated, it's an excellent choice. I also like the fact that we offer financial screening for patients who have difficulty affording healthcare.
