Bio & Overview

Dawn Howell is a board-certified family nurse practitioner based at UVA Primary Care Locust Grove. She specializes in family practice, caring for the entire family across the lifespan, and especially enjoys practicing pediatric, adolescent and women's health.

Ms. Howell was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she spent all of her childhood. She is a proud Tarheel, receiving her undergraduate nursing degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then worked as a registered nurse in hospital-based settings for eight years, including as a cardio-thoracic nurse and a Certified Post-Anesthesia Care Nurse (CPAN).

In 2008, Ms. Howell received her MSN/family nurse practitioner degree from Radford University, where she was recognized as the top academic student in her class. She worked in Cranford, New Jersey, for nearly six years before relocating back to Virginia and starting her position with UVA in 2014. In addition to her primary care work, she serves as a clinical mentor and preceptor for nurse practitioner students at UVA School of Nursing.

Ms. Howell has been recognized by Sigma Theta Tau, an international honor society of nursing, for her academic and leadership achievements since 1999. She happily resides with her husband and two daughters in Spotsylvania. Outside of work, she loves spending time with her family and her hobbies include hiking, gardening, reading and home improvement projects.

I have been with Dawn Howell for over 14 years now. Since I have been a patient of hers, her popularity has grown so much that I find It difficult to be able to schedule an appointment with her sometimes, at which times I know she has gone out of her way to fit me in to her tight schedule for which I am so grateful! I have been through some pretty monumental changes over the last 10-15 years in nearly every aspect of my life which has all manifested itself mentally, emotionally, and physically in me in challenging and negative ways. Dawn has never once made me feel misunderstood, judged, or anything other than she fully supports me unconditionally, and is always ready to steer me toward better health from right where I am at every appointment. The changes in me have been so great negatively that no one could fault her if she were to show herself to be a bit shocked at my appearance or state of my health. Instead, I feel lifted up by her each office visit I have or through MyChart interactions. She is a friend on my journey back to a healthier and happier me and I am so very grateful to have her in my corner!
