Michael Sean Ryan, MD
Pediatric Hospital Medicine
Bio & Overview
Michael Ryan, MD, MEHP, specializes in caring for children when they’re in the hospital. He understands being in the hospital can be difficult for kids and their families. “No matter the illness, kids just want to be kids,” he says. “They all have passions and interests and my job to help them feel better and get home as soon as possible.”
Dr. Ryan was born in Chicago and raised in New Jersey. A father of three and “kid at heart” himself, he’s always enjoyed working with children, beginning with his first job as a summer camp counselor. Dr. Ryan went to college to become an architect, but missed working with children. He decided to become a pediatrician and attended Loyola University Chicago for medical school and The University of Chicago for residency. He helped build a pediatric hospitalist program at Virginia Commonwealth University before coming to UVA.
Dr. Ryan enjoys being outside, playing sports, and taking on “over-the-top” adventures with his family.
