Thomas L’Ecuyer, MD, is a professor of pediatrics and division chief of pediatric cardiology at UVA. He specializes in heart failure and transplant, as well as caring for patients with cardiomyopathy and family history of cardiomyopathy (hypertrophic, dilated, and restrictive), patients with pulmonary hypertension, and infants with complex single ventricle conditions.
Dr. L’Ecuyer earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Missouri, and completed his residency training in pediatrics at UVA. He completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the University of Iowa, and served on the faculty there for several years. He then moved to Detroit, where he started as an assistant professor of pediatrics at Wayne State University School of Medicine and joined the Children’s Hospital of Michigan as an associate in cardiology. He became director of the heart failure/transplant program at the Children’s Hospital in 2005, and was promoted to associate professor of pediatrics at Wayne State in 2006. He joined UVA in 2012.

- My name is Tom L'Ecuyer. I'm a physician. I'm a professor of pediatrics, director of the Pediatric Heart Transplant Program, the Heart Failure Program at the University of Virginia, and director of the Division of Cardiology. I don't like childhood disease. I like the children. I like taking care of them. They didn't cause their disease. I like working with young families because they have challenges, and when they're worried about their child and you can allay their fears or help them to direct them towards becoming a healthier child. It gives me a tremendous reward. To me, cardiology offers the combination of taking care of very sick kids at their moment of greatest need and then also having the chance to see them when they become healthy and to follow them over time. The reason that you should consider bringing your child to UVA, if your child has a heart problem, is because of the quality teamwork that your child will receive during their stay here. We've got outstanding surgical treatment with outcomes that are competitive with the very best institutions in the country. We all love what we do.
