Richard Campbell, MD, is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon who treats:

• Hip dysplasia in infants, children, and young adults
• Other hip disorders, including Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, avascular necrosis (AVN), slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), congenital deficiencies, and instability
• Limb malalignment and deformity, including femur and tibia rotation deformities, bowed legs (genu varum), and knock knees (genu valgum)
• Neuromuscular disorders, including cerebral palsy
• Complications following trauma and infections
• Leg length discrepancy

“I think it’s important to really get to know your patients and their goals. I try to actively listen to what they are saying and really understand their concerns before talking about diagnoses and treatments,” he says. “I think a large part of an enjoyable clinic visit comes from being heard and understood. If surgery is recommended, I try to set appropriate expectations for recovery and outcomes.”

Dr. Campbell was born in New York but spent most of his childhood in south Florida. His experiences volunteering at a local children’s hospital while attending the University of Miami solidified his interest in medicine.

He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. While earning his medical degree, he spent an extra year serving as a research fellow for the Rothman Institute. He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Virgina and a pediatric orthopedic surgery and scoliosis clinical fellowship at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.

Dr. Campbell is excited to return to the University of Virginia with his wife his two daughters. He enjoys going on hikes, cooking, and educating medical students and trainees.
