Bio & Overview
Shelly Dean is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP), who specializes in caring for children with gastrointestinal disorders and liver disease. Since 2020, she has been a manager within UVA Health Children’s, and since 2023 she has served as the director of UVA Health Children’s Advanced Practice.
A lifetime resident of the Shenandoah Valley, Augusta County has always been her home. She realized that her desire to connect with people on their healthcare journey made this the right career path for her. She especially appreciates working with pediatric patients and their families and getting to provide long-term care.
With her patients, Shelly tries to get to know each family. She believes in listening with respect and openness.
“Each family I connect with is unique and has a story to tell. I want to hear their story and partner with them to improve their overall health,” she shares.
In 2012, Shelly earned her Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) MSN in 2012 and her Pediatric Primary Care post-master’s NP (CPNP-PC) in 2014. In 2023, she graduated from UVA’s School of Nursing with her Doctoral of Nursing Practice (DNP).
As a clinical leader, Shelly helped to form the collaboration between UVA Health Children’s and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh for their pediatric liver transplant program.
A mom to 4 and grandmother to 2, Shelly strives to provide the care she would want for her own family.
