We know children's bodies are different. That's why we have pediatric radiologists who are trained specifically on providing imaging services for children and teens.
Although scans are painless, they can be uncomfortable for children, and too much radiation from CT scans can be harmful for young bodies.
At UVA, we offer a rapid-sequence MRI, or fast-scan MRI, that gives our imaging specialists accurate images in just a few minutes and without the use of radiation.
General imaging services we provide include:
- Ultrasound with Duplex and color Doppler
- MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
- CT scan (computed tomography)
- Nuclear medicine

A Comfortable & Safe Environment
Being in a medical setting can be upsetting to a child, so we try to make the experience as comfortable as possible.
Our staff is skilled at calming a nervous child, reducing their anxiety and completing the exam in the shortest time possible. Children can watch videos, and our technologists use a variety of methods to help soothe infants and toddlers during a procedure.
Radiation Safety for Children
Our dedicated staff of radiology physicists continually monitor our equipment to ensure minimum radiation is used while still maintaining excellent image quality.
We have the latest in CT technology, which uses much less radiation than older CT scanners. It’s also faster, which allows the scan to be completed without the need for anesthesia.
