Infectious Diseases in Children

Every day, children get exposed to a variety of germs. Although preventing infectious diseases in children is much easier today than in the past, children still get common and unusual infections. Some of these can be difficult to diagnose or treat, especially if your child is already getting treatment for another illness or condition.

UVA Health Children’s pediatric infectious diseases team is board-certified and has special training and deep experience in treating severe, complicated or unusual infections, or infections that won’t go away. We consult on infectious disease cases referred to us both in the hospital and at the clinic.

Other than for traveler’s services, we see patients through doctor referrals only.

Conditions We Treat

• Infections with resistant organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and parasites.
• Infections in areas of the body that are difficult to treat, like meningitis.
• Patients with compromised immune systems, when they have an infection.
• Travel-related infections and pre-travel immunizations.
• Animal, insect, and tick-borne infections.
• Chronic infections.
• Tuberculosis.
• Severe respiratory infections from H1N1, measles, or other viruses.
• Unexplained fevers.
