Pediatric Eye Care

We provide a full range of pediatric eye care services, as well as expertise for complex and rare problems that require a high level of skill and state-of-the-art technology.

Pediatric Ophthalmology
UVA's pediatric eye care treats visual issues related to injury and developmental problems.

Why You Should Choose UVA

Compared to other pediatric eye doctors in the area, we:

  • See more children with visual issues due to stroke, head injury and developmental problems
  • Perform assessments of eye movement and the anatomy of the back of the eye
  • Offer more extensive experience with head injuries and craniofacial abnormalities (skull development problems).

Standout Specialties

  • Cataracts

Cataracts are rare in children. We’re able to remove cataracts, something that must be done early to maximize the chance of developing normal visual function and avoiding development of lazy eye (amblyopia). We can also replace the eye lens if necessary, a recent innovation.

    Glaucoma

Treating glaucoma in children can be quite difficult. At UVA, we have doctors specially trained in a laser procedure that can control this disease.

    Brain Conditions

Children can potentially suffer damage to their optic nerve and visual pathways from increased brain pressure caused by tumors, inflammation or congenital problems. We evaluate these children in detail and provide early treatment to try to prevent vision loss.

We work with ear, nose and throat specialists, as well as our pediatric neurosurgeons to handle lesions affecting the sinus, brain and eye areas.
