Why Nutrition Matters with Cystic Fibrosis

Nutrition is a crucial piece of the puzzle for disease management. Promoting better lung function means giving your body the resources it needs.

People with CF have higher nutritional needs. Getting the right mix of key vitamins is also important. Our pediatric dietitians will work with you to develop and meet nutrition goals.

Respiratory Therapists to Work with Your Child

With CF, maintaining good lung function is essential for long-term health. Our respiratory therapists can teach your child how to keep their airways clear. They will also work with your child on how to manage inhaled medications for their day-to-day lives.

Some patients need respiratory equipment to manage CF. This might include:

  • Nebulizers
  • Air compressors
  • Supplemental oxygen

Respiratory therapists can help you learn how to use and care for this equipment.

From Child to Adult: Care That Lasts

Cystic fibrosis is a lifelong condition. Part of our responsibility is preparing your child to manage their illness as an adult. In 2021, UVA Health Children's developed a formal transition program.

Starting at an early age, we'll help your child understand their condition. We'll help them with problem-solving and understanding what barriers they may face to getting care. We'll also help them build partnerships in their care. Our adult Cystic Fibrosis Program will provide the expertise your child needs to have the best quality of life and help them meet their goals.

Participation in CF Research

UVA Health is an approved site for the national CF Therapeutics Development Network. We've participated in studies that have contributed to new drug and treatment regimens. We've also gained an improved understanding of the underlying mechanisms of CF.

Our care providers and clinical research team want to give our patients access to the latest advances.
