Keeping Your Kid Safe: COVID-19 Vaccine FAQ

If your child is 6 months old or older, they can be vaccinated against COVID-19 at UVA Health Children's. Getting your family vaccinated is one of the best ways to keep them safe from COVID-19. 

Because the COVID virus changes every year (like the flu) newer versions of the vaccine are more effective. COVID immunity decreases over time, so it's important to make sure your child is up to date. 

Where can my child get vaccinated?

We're offering all approved vaccines at all UVA Health clinics and pharmacy locations. Call ahead to make sure we offer the right vaccine for your child. You could also contact a local doctor or pharmacy.

Anyone under the age of 18 must come with a parent or legal guardian. 

How much does it cost to get vaccinated? 

Health insurance typically covers the cost of preventative treatment like vaccines. 

How can I book an appointment for my child’s vaccination?

To make an appointment for your child’s first COVID-19 shot, call your child's healthcare provider. If your child is over the age of 12, you can also call 434.297.4829 or use MyChart to schedule an appointment.

Are walk-ins allowed?

 Appointments are required. 

Do we need to bring anything with us to the appointment?

No. You’ll just need to confirm your child’s name and date of birth. You won’t be asked to show ID for you or your child.

Can we go home right after my child gets their shot?

We ask everyone to wait 15 minutes after their shot. If your child has known allergies, we’ll ask that they wait 30 minutes. That way we can monitor them for any allergic reactions.

If they do have an allergic reaction, we can help immediately. Allergic reactions are very rare.

Will my child experience side effects? 

It's normal to feel a little run-down after being vaccinated. Your child may experience: 

• Fever
• Chills
• Fatigue
• Muscle Aches
• Headache

It's also normal to have soreness around the injection site. 

How many shots will my child get?

If your child has never been vaccinated against COVID-19, they may need up to 3 updated doses. 

Should my child get vaccinated if they’ve already had COVID-19?

COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for everyone ages 6 months and up. That includes children who have already had COVID. Vaccination after infection provides further protection.

If your child currently has COVID, please wait until after their isolation time to get them vaccinated. Talk with your child's healthcare provider if you have any questions about when to get them vaccinated after infection.

My child is afraid of needles. Can you help them feel comfortable with getting a shot?

Talk to the team at the vaccination center when you get here. Let them know that your child fears needles. Our experienced team can help meet your child’s specific needs.

My child has a history of severe allergies (anaphylaxis) to vaccines. Should they still get the COVID-19 shot?

If your child has had an allergic reaction to a vaccine before, talk with your child’s doctor first. You can also talk to a UVA Health Children's allergy specialist.

If you do decide to schedule an appointment, we’ll monitor your child for 30 minutes instead of 15. Our team is equipped to handle a severe allergic reaction if it happens.

If your child does have a severe allergic reaction to the first dose, you should talk to their doctor before the second one.
