Diabetes & Endocrinology

Pediatric endocrinologists work alongside dietitians and other specialists to address the needs of growing children with diabetes, growth and puberty disorders, pituitary,thyroid and adrenal conditions, calcium, phosphorous, and bone disorders as well as other hormonal concerns. Our diabetes program offers continuous glucose monitoring, insulin pump therapy, education and nutrition support, as well as specialized care for children transitioning from pediatric to adult care. Diabetes research at UVA Health includes artificial pancreas technology, genetic screening, and new approaches to type 1 diabetes. Other research includes approaches to management of low bone density, as seen in autism spectrum disorder and functional hypothalamic amenorrhea. This combination of specialized clinical care, innovative technology and research gives families access to advanced treatment while helping children manage their condition and thrive as they grow.

Gastroenterology & GI Surgery

Children with common and complex digestive conditions find the full range of care with our digestive health team. Our patients include children with inflammatory bowel disease, GI food allergies, liver & pancreas disease, nutritional issues, and functional GI disorders.
Bringing together gastroenterology, surgical, nutrition, and allergy/immunology specialists, we work to meet children's treatment goals across multiple disciplines. Registered dietitians and rehabilitation specialists provide additional support for children whose digestive or medical conditions affect nutrition and feeding, including children who rely on feeding tubes.

Neonatology

Our level IV NICU provides care for babies born as early as 22 weeks, as well as those born with complex congenital conditions that require medical care shortly after birth. With a neuro-NICU program focused on protecting children's mental potential and a dedicated follow-up program, we offer support that extends beyond the hospital's walls. In many instances, our maternal-fetal medicine specialists recognize problems early on and collaborate with the neonatology team. This allows for seamless care from before to after birth.
