Visiting a Patient at UVA Health Children's

Nothing helps your child recover quite like having a loving support network. In addition to the regular presence of their immediate family, we want to make sure every child is supported safely through the care of their friends and support network. But we also want to make sure they can rest and heal.

Some units have special rules about visitors for patients’ safety. But we have many ways for you to reach out and show your support.

Visiting Hours at UVA Health Children’s

University Medical Center in Charlottesville: 24/7

Culpeper, Prince William, and Haymarket hospitals: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Visitor’s Badges

As you enter the hospital, you’ll be guided to a desk where you can get a visitor’s badge. Please keep these visible during your visit.

Care Partners

Care partners are more than just visitors and have additional responsibilities. They are still visitors to the hospital and must check in for a visitor’s badge at an appropriate desk.

Visiting Restrictions

Visiting restrictions help us keep your child and our other patients safe.

People Under 18

  • Are not able to visit all areas, including the NICU. Please call your child’s unit and ask in advance before bringing another child to visit. This includes siblings
  • Are not able to spend the night
  • Must be with a Care Partner at all times
  • May be able to visit special kid-friendly spaces in our hospital

People Who Are Sick

To keep your child and other children safe, it’s important to keep illnesses out of the hospital. If you are sick, think you may be getting sick, or have been in close contact with someone who is sick, please stay home.

We understand that can be very hard. That’s why there are additional ways to check in on children in the hospital.

Caring for Our Young Visitors

For many children, visiting the hospital can bring up feelings of anxiety and fear. Child Life Specialists can talk to siblings and friends beforehand. Places like our playroom offer a child-friendly space that’s non-clinical.

Other Ways to Connect

Virtual Patient Visit

We can help connect you to the hospital’s free Wi-Fi. Then, using a personal phone or computer, your child can visit with friends and family through Skype, FaceTime, Google Meet, Messenger, Zoom, or any other virtual video tool.

If you don’t know how to do this, ask a team member. Our hospital team wants your child to know they’re supported and loved through this time.

How to Call a Patient

Our hospital rooms have phones available for patients.

Sending eCards

If you’re looking for an easy way to brighten a patient’s day, send an eCard. These are a free service.

Pick out an image and add your message. Then you can have it e-mailed or delivered by hand to a patient’s room.

Order From the Gift Shop

Our gift shop offers a variety of gifts, from gift cards and keepsakes to snacks and headphones. You can go in person to pick something out or call and order by phone. Your gift will be delivered directly to the patient’s room.

If you order from an outside shop, we do have some restrictions on what can be brought in.

  • Check with your child’s care team about food and flowers
  • All balloons must be mylar, not latex (for patient safety)
